Ponta dos Ganchos Resort, Brazil

I know it’s only been a little over a year since I started saving everything for our house purchase, but it feels like 10.  Of course that makes me sound like I waste all my money but that’s not what I’m getting at.  For someone like me who loves to travel, being frugal is a learning experience.  What can I say, I like making money to experience new people and places.  I was over on coolhunting.com and saw this link to the resort this morning.  That first picture just looks heavenly to me and I had to share.

I can’t wait to get this home, and start saving for trips again.  Next up on my list is either Ireland, Brazil or Spain.  Where do you want to go?

Ponta dos Ganchos Resort, Brazil

Located on a private peninsula along Brazil’s Southern coast and part of the esteemed Relaix & Chateaux group, Ponta dos Ganchos ranks among one of the world’s most exclusive resorts. With over-the-top luxurious bungalows, genuinely gracious staff, a no kids under 18 policy and plenty of activities that take advantage of the naturally lush surroundings, a trip to the hotel offers the kind of total relaxation that’s difficult to achieve otherwise.

After a car and driver delivered Ami and me from the Florianopolis airport (about an hour’s drive), a glass of champagne and several staff greeted us at reception and whisked our luggage on a golf cart to our rooms. We followed behind with the concierge who personally escorted us to go over the details, all of which are top-notch.

Our accommodations consisted of two of the four recently-opened Emerald Villas—spacious bungalows (nearly 2500 square-feet) kitted out with an infinity plunge pool, dry sauna and whirlpool bath, among other amenities. With sweeping views of the bay, dotted with Oyster traps and the occasional fishing boat, we couldn’t get enough lounging on the private deck while listening to music on the surround sound speakers (a custom CD of Brazilian music is yours for the taking) and taking frequent dips in the pool to cool off.

Indoors, a huge and inviting sectional couch (great for watching movies that are available for check-out), a king-size bed with 600 thread count sheets, as well as a Nespresso coffee maker, well-stocked minibar and wine cellar offer plenty of other options for hanging out. Other less obvious features, such as dual showers with glass walls that lend the feeling of bathing al fresco and two separate WCs, make every little experience an enjoyable one.

While the romance and seclusion of the Villas is unrivaled, Ponta dos Ganchos provides a host of other ways to enjoy your time there. We spent several hours lounging on the private beach, sipping caiprinhas and snacking on food served by the attentive staff. (All food is included while alcohol is not.) In addition to beachside dining, the seven-course breakfast, served on a deck overlooking the ocean, is a great way to enjoy a meal too. Dinners in the restaurant specialize in seafood and haute interpretations of local cuisine, which can also be reserved by couples on the private island.

A swim across the bay to the tiny island is a welcome diversion, but sailing, fishing, an indoor heated pool, tennis, snorkeling, a game room and more are all available for the taking as well. We opted for a decidedly more lazy approach and booked massages (not included in the price) at the Dior spa, which—set along the edge of the peninsula in canopied open-air rooms—was an unforgettable treat.

From the spectacular rooms to the lush landscaping and all the sumptuous details in between, Ponta dos Ganchos is high on our list of favorite destinations. To book, visit the reservations site. Rack rates start at about $530 nightly.

Heading To China

Talk about a trip sneaking up on you.  As much as I’ve been looking forward to this, with everything else going on this trip just seemed to come out of no where even though I’ve seen it getting closer on the calendar.  I’m a little anxious but really excited to land in someplce I’ve never been and start taking pictures.  Bringing my Canon 20D and my EOS Rebel 2000 for some film, 4 lenses and my laptop.  If by any luck I have power at my seat, I may be able to get some stuff done.. that 12 hour flight would give me a great bulk of dedicated time to GTD.  However knowing me I’ll probably end up working on photos the whole time just because I can.

That map up yonder is where I’ll be for the next two weeks.  I know that typically blogs/most sites/anything fun is blocked from China, I have a few proxies lined up with hopes to tunnel my traffic through home so I can at least post some photos to my site, but no guarantees.

In any case, check back every now and then and you might see some random photos from somewhere in the world where I end up.  See you in two weeks, 再见

The Countdown Begins

My Chinese Visa

So it’s officially started, my one week countdown to a two week trip through China is on. It’s a bit maddening to say the least, however the tour I’m taking is fairly americanized, which means the culture shock should be a little easierto handle, but from what I’ve heard from friends I really don’t have a whole lot to worry about.

Clothes, Camera & Computer, the three c’s for a winning trip.  I wish it could just be the first two, but I realize there’s no way I can take a 12 hour flight without being semi-productive with as much work as i have to do these days.  Hopefully on the way over if by pure luck there is a power adapter, I can re-build the whatsopen site with the new features and framework I’m pioneering for our revision.  Maybe on the way back I can start going through all my photos and hit the US with a jump start on all the shotty I’ll be taking.

There are two phrases I need to master before I go.  “Where is the bathroom” and “Can I take your picture”.  I honestly feel if I have those covered, the rest will just fall into place.  I’m also adding the data package to my iPhone this week so I should be able to moblog some photos along the way.  I wish Val could get the time off to go with me, but hey it’s not the last time I plan to travel to Asia, so at least the first time around I’ve got a base for what to expect.

I leave May 5th @ 7am, so if you need any Jimmy-lov’n before that hit me up, this week is already going faster than it should be and the work level is not going down as fast as I’d hoped.
