MMS & Tethering Enabled, Today.

I was pretty bummed to hear that it was going to take till the end of summer to get two of the hottest features coming with iPhone OS3, Tethering and MMS.  However after some digging I found out that it’s a simple case of upgrading your Carrier settings. All OS3 3G phones already have the features integrated and after this quick 5 second process and a reboot on the phone, everything magically appears.

The working process can be found here:
How to Enable MMS & 3G Tethering on iPhone OS 3.0 GM Build 7A341

The above blog mentions this is for Windows machines, however I’m running the following version of iTunes and it worked just fine with the GM Developer Release.

I have not yet tried the process on windows, however on mac, I simply downloaded this file, renamed the file to remove the .zip extension, and did an Option + Restore click to select and apply the new carrier file.  After a quick reboot, teathering works flawlessly and MMS is still spotty, but all the features are there.  Note I also tried this on a 2G phone and it did not work, the phone still works fine but the features are missing.  I plan on doing this with my new 3GS when it comes in the mail tomorrow as well.  Here are some screenshots below.

Enjoy this at your own risk, I’m not responsible if you create an Apple Paperweight or rack up 5 grand in fees, but as far as I can tell, this seems like a harmless tweak.

iPhoney Browser

For any developer who’s working on optimizing their site for the iPhone/touch, iPhoney is a really awesome little mac must have app.  Lightweight and does the job well.  Not to mention it a lot easier than waiting for a full site to load on the little guy.

By the way, if anyone is so inclined to look, I’m using the WPtouch iPhone theme on my blog here and it makes for a really nice mobile version.

It’s GTD Week: Day 2

Day two is complete in my on-going search for efficiency through dedication.  Today was awesome, and if you don’t mind I’d like to share.

  • Finished up a few finance things I rolled into today
  • Cleaned out my trusty “@Followup” email folder that has had 20-100 emails rotating in it since I started 9 Meter earlier this year – huzzaahhhH!
  • Setup a copy of OmniFocus with Dave’s advice and got my tasks in order, sofar I love this app, trying to decide if it + the iPhone app are worth a $100 investment.
  • Worked on a bit of project goodness
  • Had a great new business iChat meeting (actually using it for a purpose for the first time) on a possible really exciting idea I may start on in a few weeks

For what it’s worth, so-far this week is going great.  I love the fact I’m avoiding laziness and actually getting my stuff together.  Tomorrow should be equally as fulfilling. Going to attempt to finish sorting through ALL the bookmarks (excluding del.icio.us tags) and sync them between browsers.  That alone would make this week worth it.

Val is cooking Parmesan Chicken tonight, and we’re going to watch a movie.  After she goes to bed I’m looking forward to Listing to The Dip by Seth Godin which my buddy Jason so graciously gifted for me earlier today.  Thanks bro!

Seriously Disturbed

Most of you know I’ve been underground in the lab up to my neck in code for the past month (literally) in hopes for an amazing launch of our new venture, the re-release of What’s Open.  Planning since February, strategic dates and delivery since March, and production since I got back from China on a custom API, crazy robust Database, slick new look, iPhone App & the hopes for launch today.  Well, thanks to a lovley screwup from Apple our whole plan got thrown out like those leftovers from thanksgiving you couldn’t stand to smell after 3 weeks of turkey.

The whole plan for success relied around many things, but primarily it was hitting deadlines and sticking to them.  Based on one we were guarenteed (or at least as much of that as you can assume on the web) certain press, exclusives, etc.  However our game plan was screwed when Apple pretty much lost our App submission and has failed to respond to us after every attempt to contact them imaginable.  If i wasn’t so busy trying to work damage control, I would seriously drive up to Cupertino at this point and at least yell at an overpaid secretary. May not fix anything but at least I would feel a little better.

I finally caught up on some sleep last night, but up untill yesterday you could count the number of hours I’d had this week on your two hands.  It was fun towards the beginning of the week, but after the awesome supprise that our plan was shot due to the early app store wed night, thats when the breakdown started.

I’m not looking for sympathy, I just want Apple to fix the problem.  Now with them selling out everywhere, services down, phones breaking, and still no delivery platform, it’s really getting fun.  Luckily I upgraded yesterday and avoided the mass confusion today, but it’s still annoying, and the problem hasn’t fixed itself yet.

Apple, if you read this, please, stop kissing babies and posting amazing articles on your website about how awesome you are and reach out to the people that are making your stock go up and keep you in business, the developers.  However from the look of it,  down 5points since this morning should tell you something.  Ouch, too soon?

What Will Tomorrow Bring

Regardless of what the “ohh, and one more thing” may bring at Job’s WWDC keynote tomorrow morning (possibly most likely the new phone), take a minute to appreciate the awesomeness of the original iPhone.  I don’t care who you are and even if you hate it, you can’t deny it’s an amazing piece of technology.

For the heck of it I added an always updating RSS feed to the right sidebar from summize for some WWDC talk.

How Much for Data?

YenOk, someone is laughing hard at this, all the way to their eTrade account; get this.  So I call AT&T International service tonight to remove the Mexico package from my phone and add the China stuff so I can tweet from the great wall and all that fun stuff.  The lady that was helping me (wonderfully nice) starts to build up like she has some bad news for me, so I sat back and tried to follow along.

Apparently due to limitations with China Mobile, voice and data don’t play well together.  If you add on a data “package” (to save money) you get locked out of voice service. What’s better, your only other option is if you only add the world traveler package to make cheap international calls, you need to use the data roaming rate of $0.02/Kb. For those of you keeping score that’s $20.48/Mb. What the hell man?  To top it off I figured maybe it’s time I invest in the HSDPA plan and use the wireless anywhere deal with my laptop while I’m there, but that concept is way too easy to be true.  Same deal applies, if I use the data tied to my account, I still get no voice service, and the International BroadbandConnect monthly fee is $140/month.

Just for the hell of it I jumped on Verizon’s site and checked out their plans for an EVDO card and where the American Nationwide price was comparable, they charge the same rate in China for data.  So that’s all there is to it, I’ll take pictures on my phone and if I find wi-fi i’ll post them all real fast or possibly order it in the hotel, but like hell I’m paying $20 bones/mb or giving my money to two separate carriers.

I love all of you dearly who come to my blog, but seeing as each photo from my phone is about 1.2mb, I don’t love you that much ;) Â
