MMS & Tethering Enabled, Today.

I was pretty bummed to hear that it was going to take till the end of summer to get two of the hottest features coming with iPhone OS3, Tethering and MMS.  However after some digging I found out that it’s a simple case of upgrading your Carrier settings. All OS3 3G phones already have the features integrated and after this quick 5 second process and a reboot on the phone, everything magically appears.

The working process can be found here:
How to Enable MMS & 3G Tethering on iPhone OS 3.0 GM Build 7A341

The above blog mentions this is for Windows machines, however I’m running the following version of iTunes and it worked just fine with the GM Developer Release.

I have not yet tried the process on windows, however on mac, I simply downloaded this file, renamed the file to remove the .zip extension, and did an Option + Restore click to select and apply the new carrier file.  After a quick reboot, teathering works flawlessly and MMS is still spotty, but all the features are there.  Note I also tried this on a 2G phone and it did not work, the phone still works fine but the features are missing.  I plan on doing this with my new 3GS when it comes in the mail tomorrow as well.  Here are some screenshots below.

Enjoy this at your own risk, I’m not responsible if you create an Apple Paperweight or rack up 5 grand in fees, but as far as I can tell, this seems like a harmless tweak.

Great Deal

Herbie on iTunes

Herbie on iTunes

I was browsing around the iTunes jazz sale today and caught this awesome little gem.  Talk about a deal right?  4 tracks @ $1.00, or $8 for all four.  I suppose apple feels that the time it takes you to click only one button is worth the extra $4.  C’mon, how you going to play Herbie like that?

Apple Stock

Evil Laugh

Seriously Disturbed

Most of you know I’ve been underground in the lab up to my neck in code for the past month (literally) in hopes for an amazing launch of our new venture, the re-release of What’s Open.  Planning since February, strategic dates and delivery since March, and production since I got back from China on a custom API, crazy robust Database, slick new look, iPhone App & the hopes for launch today.  Well, thanks to a lovley screwup from Apple our whole plan got thrown out like those leftovers from thanksgiving you couldn’t stand to smell after 3 weeks of turkey.

The whole plan for success relied around many things, but primarily it was hitting deadlines and sticking to them.  Based on one we were guarenteed (or at least as much of that as you can assume on the web) certain press, exclusives, etc.  However our game plan was screwed when Apple pretty much lost our App submission and has failed to respond to us after every attempt to contact them imaginable.  If i wasn’t so busy trying to work damage control, I would seriously drive up to Cupertino at this point and at least yell at an overpaid secretary. May not fix anything but at least I would feel a little better.

I finally caught up on some sleep last night, but up untill yesterday you could count the number of hours I’d had this week on your two hands.  It was fun towards the beginning of the week, but after the awesome supprise that our plan was shot due to the early app store wed night, thats when the breakdown started.

I’m not looking for sympathy, I just want Apple to fix the problem.  Now with them selling out everywhere, services down, phones breaking, and still no delivery platform, it’s really getting fun.  Luckily I upgraded yesterday and avoided the mass confusion today, but it’s still annoying, and the problem hasn’t fixed itself yet.

Apple, if you read this, please, stop kissing babies and posting amazing articles on your website about how awesome you are and reach out to the people that are making your stock go up and keep you in business, the developers.  However from the look of it,  down 5points since this morning should tell you something.  Ouch, too soon?

What Will Tomorrow Bring

Regardless of what the “ohh, and one more thing” may bring at Job’s WWDC keynote tomorrow morning (possibly most likely the new phone), take a minute to appreciate the awesomeness of the original iPhone.  I don’t care who you are and even if you hate it, you can’t deny it’s an amazing piece of technology.

For the heck of it I added an always updating RSS feed to the right sidebar from summize for some WWDC talk.

Up the Yangtze

Up The YangtzeI saw this on Dave’s linkblog this morning and seeing as I’m going to be on this boat tomorrow, I’m really going to see this movie when I get back. Up the Yangtze documents the building of the world’s largest dam on the Yangtze river in China. It’s really sad for me knowing that I’m going to be part of the whole reason they made this movie, but my goal for coming to China was to document life as I see it in the short two weeks I’m here.. nothing more. I love indie films that expose the other side of things, and this is probably the first time I’m on that side. Even though I feel bad for being part of it, this is still communist China and regardless of weather or not I bought the ticket, it’s still going to happen. The good in this is that they’re building this damn to stop this river from flooding out the people that live there, however loosing your home, weather it be temporary or permanent is never fun.

The least I can do is try to take a picture or two to capture the feelings I come across a change in history and life for these people.
